We’re proud to share the successful completion of the Michelham Ward reconfiguration at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust — a transformative healthcare project led by HDS Architects in 2024.
Working closely with the Trust, clinical teams, and estates management, HDS Architects reimagined the aging Michelham Ward into a modern, patient-centered space designed to improve care delivery, enhance privacy and dignity, and create a therapeutic environment for both patients and staff.
The project delivered a fully refurbished 21-room medical ward specializing in gastroenterology and patient isolation. The ward, located on Level 3 of the Eastbourne DGH, includes 17 ensuite rooms and 4 with ensuite shower facilities and is part of a larger ongoing investment program to improve facilities and capacity at the hospital.
Key Highlights:
🔹 Patient-Centred Design: The reconfigured layout prioritises patient wellbeing, with increased natural light, improved wayfinding, and greater spatial clarity. Single-room accommodation and enhanced en-suite facilities promote dignity and infection control.
🔹 Clinical Efficiency: By co-locating staff bases and treatment areas more strategically, the new ward layout supports more efficient workflows, improves visibility for nursing teams, and enhances response times.
🔹 Sustainable Healthcare: The project focused on sustainable upgrades wherever possible — from energy-efficient lighting and ventilation systems to durable, low-impact materials that support long-term operational resilience.
🔹 Collaboration at Its Core: This was a truly integrated effort. From stakeholder engagement workshops to daily coordination with contractors and clinical staff, HDS Architects ensured the design responded directly to the needs of its users.
