Back in 2024 we completed a very exciting project: a state-of-the-art modular healthcare facility at Peterborough City Hospital.

The two-story building, known as Ward C16 houses 20 beds and was constructed using 22 modules and includes essential hospital infrastructure like a reception area and utility rooms.

In collaboration with our healthcare partners and construction teams, HDS Architects led the design of this rapid-build solution, which responds directly to the increasing demand for adaptable and future-proof NHS infrastructure.

Why Modular?

Modular construction was chosen for its speed, sustainability, and flexibility—key priorities in today’s healthcare landscape. The design focused on:

  • Accelerated Delivery: The building was completed in a significantly reduced timeframe without compromising on quality or clinical function.
  • Minimised Disruption: Off-site fabrication meant the hospital could continue serving patients without the noise and disruption of a traditional build.
  • Sustainable Outcomes: Reduced material waste, lower carbon footprint, and improved energy performance align with the NHS’s Net Zero goals.

Designed with Purpose

The facility includes specialist treatment rooms, staff welfare areas, and patient recovery suites—all designed to NHS standards, with user experience and clinical efficiency at the heart of every detail. Our design team worked closely with clinical stakeholders to ensure the space truly meets the needs of both patients and staff.

As healthcare continues to evolve, modular construction presents an exciting pathway to future-ready healthcare spaces—and we’re just getting started.
